About the Class

Nirmalakka is a Master Artisan who has been associated with BuDa Folklore for more than 12 years. In teaching us the quilt-making craft of Uttara Kannada, Nirmalakka will use completely traditional techniques: only needle, thread, and scrap fabric. In becoming Nirmalakka's student, you will not only learn the techniques of joining fabrics in a traditional way, but also be introduced to the customs and stories of this unique community quilting culture. The outcome is a beautiful kowdhi -quilt- that reflects generations of cloth-based narratives passed down from mothers to daughters.
Please note that we will not be using any form of machinery. Nirmalakka's quilting methods are rustic, bringing you back to basic quilt making traditions. Together we are trying to revive the craft of community quilt-making in the old way.
